The Short Hair Cut - Be Brave says your hairdresser

A short hair Style can tell people you mean business. It is positive, shows confidence and gives you Style. Can a short hair cut work best for you?

People perceive women wearing short hair cuts to be confident and outgoing, according to many studies done.

Is a short hair cut for you? If you love change you probably have a short hair already, if not —and remember this — it will always grow back!

Things to take into account

One of the most important things to consider with a short hair cut is the upkeep. With short hair you need to visit your hairdresser to be trimmed every 4-6 weeks to keep it in top condition.

Take your time considering which short hair cut best suits you. Your face shape can determine if it will suit you before you choose a short salon style. Oval or heart shaped faces best suit short styles, while round and square faces may require a longer style at the back or layered around the face.

Oval face is considered to be the easiest shape to work with by hairdressers. An oval face can usually suit most hair styles and that's the ones you’ll see in most hair salon images, where most looks and lengths with it still seem right. The oval face is 1.5 times as long as its width, with the forehead a little bit wider than the Chin.

Heart formed faces are widest at the temples and narrowest at the chin line. Usually the chin is small and delicate. The hair style's objective should be to create an oval by adding width at the chin line.

Round faces have a round jaw. Because they lack the length of the oval face, the hair should be cut to create the look of length in the face. This is achieved by creating height on top of the head, and little hair width by keeping it flat at the sides and around the ears.

Pear shaped faces have a narrow forehead and are widest at the chin line, with a round chin. The objective of a suitable style of hair cut is to give the illusion of an oval face by creating width at the temples and forehead.

Rectangular faces have a square chin and hairline, and are long and narrow. The ideal style of hair cut is one which creates width at the sides hiding the narrowness. A fringe can also take length away from the face, and a style with a side parting will help to take away the square look.

Diamond formed faces are narrow in the forehead and chin and widest at the cheekbones. By creating width at the forehead and keeping it down at the cheekbones, the look of an oval face can be achieved by your hairdresser.

Square faces have a square jaw line and hairline at the forehead. They look 'too short', so a suitable style try’s to create length in the face. Hair should be layered around the face to soften the jaw line. Jaw and brow nearly same width. Hair should wisp around face to reduce that square look.

While it's not uncommon for someone to walk into our hair salon and say, "Give me a Posh Spice", the secret to a style that works for you is having a hair cut that works with the shape of your face.

When you're planning your new cut, you should choose your hairdresser wisely. Be prepared to invest a bit more money in a good hair salon, as there is no disguising a bad cut – more so a short one. Saying that, if you're happy with your current hair stylist they have one big advantage: they will know your hair and what you like.

Before your cut, book a consultation in the hair salon. Most salons offer these for free and there is no commitment. If you have the time, have the consultation a couple of days before coming back to your hairdresser for your hair cut. This will give you time to think about the advice the stylist gives to you, and for you to be sure that the stylist is on the same wavelength as you.

Making the look of more texture in your hair is an important part of today’s short hair cuts. Make sure your hairdresser is current with the latest techniques.

A good hair stylist will also spend time showing you how to maintain your look and how to maintain your new textured effect with the recommended products at home. Ask them what brushes you should use and how to use the hair dryer for best effect.
